Two neighbors, J. E. Arrington and James Roxburg gave the land jointly for the cemetery and the school house. Since so many of the Arrington family are buried there, the cemetery is often called the ARRINGTON CEMETERY.

The first marked grave is dated 1880; however, there are at least 20 graves marked only with field stones. No names nor dates are visible. Along with four grandbabies of J. B. Arrington in a row, there is also a marker to J. E. Arrington’s arm. It was amputated in 1897 in an effort to stop the growth of cancer, but the effort failed. Mr. Arrington was buried only two months later.

Driving directions to the Friendship Cemetery are as follows: From the intersection of Morgan Street and W. Pearl St. drive west on Hwy 377 for 4.5 miles. There is a cemetery sign on the highway; watch for that and turn right on an unmarked county road beside a blue metal warehouse. Drive .1 mile on pavement then watch for a dirt lane to the right just as you approach the yard of the house in front of the drive. Turn on the lane and the cemetery is .1 mile farther. It is surrounded with a nice metal fence and is well maintained. The little school house ceased to be used in the late 1940’s. It sat to the northeast of the cemetery, but it is nothing more than an old foundation and a bit of rubble now. The windmill sits all alone now with no duties to perform.

We completed this survey one sunny afternoon in early January, 1989.

Mary Kate Durham & Merle McNeese

FRIENDSHIP CEMETERY

NAMES DATES

ARCHER, Charles Wade 2-06-1923 3-26-1923

ARCHER, Frank 1-31-1921 10-20-1974
     Married (Leu Ella) 7-01-1944

ARCHER, George W. 1880 1947
ARCHER, Hettie May 5-18-1884 5-01-1962
ARCHER, Joseph Leon 1903 1929
ARCHER, Lou ELla 9-11-1922
    Married(Frank) 7-01-1944

ARCHER, Sam 6-29-1924 11-17-1960
ARRINGTON, Ha t tie A 5-14-1868 5 - 03 -19 50
ARRINGTON, Charles Henry 10-20-1862 10-29-1945
ARRINGTON, Charles T. no dates
       Co.
