DeWITT T. GILLIAM

1896 - 1968

DeWitt T. Gilliam was born in Hood County, Texas, April 2, 1896. He was converted and baptized into the fellowship of the Fall Creek Baptist Church at about the age of 12 years. On September 19, 1919, he was married to Miss Kathleen Clifton. Three children, two sons and one daughter, were born to them. DeWitt spent about 20 years teaching in the public schools of Texas. For a good many years he was in charge of welfare and rehabilitation work in Hood County.

He was an ordained deacon, enjoyed singing and filled many important positions in his church. At the annual session in 1930 he was elected Clerk of Paluxy Association and again in 1931. Then for several years his work kep him away from the annual meetings. However, in 1951 he was elected to that position again and continued to serve for nine consecutive years.

In the spring of 1967 Mr. and Mrs. Gilliam were in a serious car accident from which neither ever fully recovered, although they lived a few years longer. Their last months were spent in a nursing home. His body was laid to rest in the Acton Cemetery with C.G. Carter conducting the last rites.

DeWitt T. Gilliam was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War I. He died January 2, 1968.
