Alice Merrill Price, a teacher and columnist, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999 in Georgetown. She was 98.

Mrs. Price was born July 10, 1901 to a pioneer family whose ranch spanned parts of Hood, Johnson and Somervell counties. She attended school at Bald Knob and later Mambrino. She married Judge Price on July 23, 1919.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas State College for Women and was a school principal in Baker, Duffau, Center and Acton. Later, she taught fifth grade in Granbury until her retirement.

She then began a second career as newspaper reporter and columnist for the Hood County News Tablet. She also served as a special correspondent to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. She retired when she was 78.

She was a member of the Granbury Church of Christ, Woman’s Wednesday Club, the Hood County Library board, the Hood County Historical Society, Kings Daughters Circle, American Legion Auxiliary, National Retired Teachers Association, Hood County Retired Teachers Association, Hood County Cancer Society, Woman’s Home Demonstration Club, the Texas State Teachers Association, and the T.W.U. Alumni Association. Mrs. Price was also a charter member and organizer of the Brazos River Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and a long-time member of the Teha-Lana Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Catherine Price Andrews and Dorothy Helen Price.

She is survived by five children, Maxine Amstutz of Dallas; Wanda Cavitt of Hico; Roselle Shelby of Georgetown; Patsy Armstrong of Arlington; and E.B. Price of Bertram; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 at Granbury Church of Christ with Minister Chris Frizzell officiating. Her grandsons were pallbearers. Burial was in Nubbin Ridge Cemetery.
