Robert Clifton & Lanora Carlile Watkins

Robert Clifton Watkins, son of David Edward and Carolyn Adelia Daniel Watkins, was born in Dover, Stewart County, Tennessee, May 9, 1876. As a small child he moved with his family to Tolar, Hood County, Texas, and grew to manhood there.

November 8, 1896, Robert Clifton Watkins married Lanora (Nora) Carlile, daughter of Lewis Edmond and Mary Eldora Pierce Carlile, who was born in Cass County, Texas, March 17, 1881. The Carliles had moved to Hood County when Nora was seven years old. Robert Clifton and Nora Watkins lived on a farm near Tolar. The place adjoined David Edward's farm. Robert Clifton operated both farms until his oldest daughter was ready for school. At this time, the family moved into Tolar to be near the school, and Robert Clifton worked in the general store with his father.

Robert Clifton and Nora Carlile Watkins had seven children, all born in Hood County:

Lola May Watkins, born September 26, 1897 and died October 30, 1956 in Fort Worth, Texas after a long battle with cancer. She married Jack Payton.

Mabel Watkins, born January 25, 1900 married (1) Julian Fine and (2) Charles A. Wagner. She died March 5, 1992 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Clarence Howard Watkins, born November 6, 1902, died January 29, 1994 in Corpus Christi, Texas, married (1) Callie Francisco (2) Leota (Harris) Mercer.

Carl Clifton Watkins, born June 21, 1905, died November 21, 1985 in Bossier City, Louisiana, married Lyndia Smith.

Mary Watkins, born April 20, 1908, died November 26, 1961 in Phoenix, Arizona, married Jens Frederick Schultz, September 27, 1924.

R.C. Watkins born December 21, 1911, and died February 30, 1930 in Hood County, Texas.

Bonnie Lee Watkins born May 24, 1914, married Dallas Carvel Hopper, August 13, 1932, and died March 5, 2000 in Clifton, Texas.

Robert Clifton was a man of delicate health, so when relatives showed up in their home in Tolar with the flu in 1918, Robert Clifton went to his mother and father's home to avoid the dread disease. When Nora came down with the flu, he returned to care for her and contracted the disease. He died a few days later, October 25, 1918, leaving Nora with seven children.

Nora Carlile Watkins supported her family by working in the general store with her father-in-law, David Edward Watkins, until he sold the store and retired. She then worked for Mr. Diering for a while. A strong, loving woman, Nora managed to provide for her children and lived in Tolar until 1936. She then moved in with her youngest daughter, Bonnie Lee Watkins Hopper in Granbury, Texas. She lived with the Hoppers, spending some time with her other children, especially Mary Schultz in Arizona, until her death, April 12, 1980 in Lampasas, Texas. She is buried beside her husband, Robert Clifton Watkins, in Strouds Creek Cemetery in Hood County, Texas.
