James M. Halford was born in Tennessee August 24, 1815. We have no record of his early life, nor when he came to Texas. His second wife, who was baptized by Noah T. Byars, was the daughter of David Crockett. Elder Halford was preaching in Texas before 1860 and assisted in establishing churches in Park and Hood Counties, including the First Baptist Church of Granbury. He left Hood County with the recruits for the Confederate Army at the beginning of the Civil War. He died September 8, 1863 and was buried by the side of Mrs. Crockett in the Acton Cemetery.
