Hood County was organized in 1866 from Johnson County and a small portion of Erath County. In 1875 Somervell County was created from a portion of Hood County.
Dr. J. N. Doyle of Acton was the first elected Hood County legislator to Austin in 1873 – seven years after the formation of the county.
