George W. Elliott, resident of this community since 1906, passed away at his home southeast of town Monday night at 9:30 o’clock. He had been troubled with his heart for about a year. His vitality and strength aided him in overcoming the severe illness he had about a year ago, and had been able to be in town often and attend to his business. About three weeks ago he had another severe attack, but was soon up again. Last week he was stricken again and his strength steadily declined until his passing Monday night.
Mr. Elliott was born September 6, 1863 in Carthridge, Panola county, Texas, being 68 years, 7 months and 5 days of age. At the age of two he went to Falls county with his parents, and later to Hamilton county and when he was four years old moved to Hill county, where he spent his boyhood. When nineteen years of age he moved with his parents to Hood county. There he was married to Miss Alice Compton March 20, 1885, at Lipan. To this union were born six children, four of whom survive. Twin boys died in infancy. The family moved to Stephens county in 1905 and later to this community [in Shackelford County].
George W. Elliott was one of the best known men of this section. He was a successful stock farmer and was a large property owner. He had done much good in this community with his money, and many are there who will remember gratefully his helping hand. He became a Christian early in life and lived an upright Christian life. He was a member of the Masonic lodge for many years. Mr. Elliott was a friendly man, enjoyed doing good, and greatly appreciated the friendship of others. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and aided his children in making a start in life.
On March 27th Mr. and Mrs. Elliott celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary with a dinner. All their children and a number of friends were present.
Mr. Elliott’s family found the following written in the front of his ledger:
“Last words of Dr. S.P. Brooks: I feel that my life work has been done and I face the future with confidence. I have other work to do where I am going. I know that I go to an all powerful God, wherever he may be.
“I know he is a person alive, who created man in his own image. Beyond that I have no knowledge – no fear – only faith.”
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Baptist church. Elder R.V. Sarrels, pastor of the Primitive Baptist church of Anson, conducted the services, assisted by Rev. Ledger and Rev. Bryant. A great throng of friends and relatives were present to pay their respects to his life. The auditorium was filled to capacity and many were unable to gain entrance. The floral offering were tokens of love and esteem, sent by a large number of friends.
Interment was made at the Moran Cemetery by the Masonic lodge.
Deceased is survived by his wife and the following children: Olin Elliott, Moran; Ross Elliott, Breckenridge; Mrs. J.M. Townsend, Moran; and Mrs. R.W. Higgins, Cisco.
